What to prepare before building a business website

A practical guide from Aussie Digital Lab.

Start with the job the website needs to do

Before choosing colours or collecting design references, define what the website needs to help your business achieve. A service business may need better enquiries, while a retailer needs a clearer route from product discovery to checkout. Choose the main action and identify the information a visitor needs before taking it.

Describe your audience and offer

Write a short explanation of who you serve, what you provide and what makes the offer relevant. List the questions prospective customers regularly ask. Those questions often reveal useful content for the homepage, service pages and FAQs. Use confirmed facts and examples you have permission to publish.

Agree the page structure

Plan a sitemap before writing every paragraph. Most business websites need a clear homepage, an about page, service information and a contact route. Some need individual service pages, product categories or useful articles. Each page should have a distinct purpose and an obvious next step.

Collect content and access

Prepare your approved logo, suitable images and service details. Confirm the domain and hosting arrangements and who can grant access. Decide who will review the content and consolidate feedback. Clear responsibilities reduce delays and prevent conflicting decisions during development.

Plan the practical features

List the forms, payments, bookings or other integrations you need. Explain the workflow behind each feature: what the customer enters, what the business receives and what happens next. A named feature is not a complete requirement until the steps are understood.

Prepare for launch and ownership

Agree how the site will be checked, who will maintain it and how your team will edit the content. Review mobile layouts, enquiry delivery and important links on the installed site. Domain renewals, hosting, software licences and ongoing care should all have a clear owner. A useful brief makes those decisions visible before the website goes live.
