An ecommerce launch checklist for small businesses

A practical guide from Aussie Digital Lab.

Prepare a catalogue customers can understand

Use consistent product names, images and descriptions. Confirm variations, prices and stock information before uploading. Categories should reflect the way customers browse, not only the way the business organises its internal records. Make the information needed for a purchase easy to find.

Define delivery and collection rules

Decide where you will deliver, how charges are calculated and whether collection is available. Consider the practical details of processing and dispatching orders. If you need a courier integration, confirm the account, extension and workflow requirements before promising automated labels or live rates.

Connect the right payment account

The payment gateway should use an eligible account belonging to the business. Configure the agreed currency and payment products, then use the provider’s test process. Review the customer experience for successful, declined and cancelled payments. A success screen alone is not proof that funds have been received.

Explain the customer information

Provide clear contact, delivery and returns information that matches the way the business operates. Check that the store’s notifications explain what happens after an order is placed. Avoid copying policy statements that do not reflect your products or service model.

Run complete test orders

Follow the journey from browsing to order confirmation on desktop and mobile. Test different delivery choices and representative product variations. Check that order records, stock changes and emails behave as expected. Keep test and live payment settings clearly separated.

Plan ongoing store operations

Assign responsibility for stock updates, enquiries, refunds and software maintenance. Confirm who monitors order notifications and how the business will handle exceptions. The store is ready when the customer journey and the operational workflow work together, with the agreed checks completed on the live hosting environment.
